Course Migration Cleanup Guide

This page is designed to help instructors clean up their course in Canvas after it has been migrated from Moodle.

Keep in mind Moodle and Canvas are two different systems and the migration process is not perfect. Once your courses are in Canvas, there will be some cleanup involved. You will need to review your materials in Canvas and clean up items as needed, depending on the complexity of your course. NOTE: For programs using Master shells, this cleanup may be done in the Master shell and then later copied to your live Canvas semester course once it is available.

IMPORTANT: Some content in Moodle does NOT migrate into Canvas.

This chart shows which items migrate over well from Moodle to Canvas, which require cleanup, and which do not migrate at all and need to be rebuilt.

Post Migration Cleanup Tips

We advise reviewing migrated course content as soon as possible to identify where you will need to make adjustments.

  1. Review the Moodle to Canvas Comparison Chart to get more information on what migrates and what does not.
  2. Run the Course Link Validator under Settings in the course menu, to identify any broken links.
  3. Convert anything that migrated from Moodle that needs to be edited or rebuilt.
  4. Review the Moodle to Canvas Conversion Guide for details on comparable tools between the two systems.
  5. Publish each item as you finish reviewing it and have completed any adjustments needed
  6. Check your course using the Student View tool in Canvas to review your course from a student’s perspective.
  7. Review your course for its completeness

Important Date: Faculty will retain access to Moodle through Tuesday, January 31st, 2025.

This will be helpful during the course migration cleanup, in case you need to access your Moodle course for any items that did not migrate to Canvas.
